Potted Cupcake Bouquet

So I’ve been wanting to make some cupcakes, right? But I didn’t want to make something “normal” this time. So after looking around for inspiration, I noticed the bouquets of flowers around my house and thought, I could definitely make one of those out of cupcakes.

After researching and youtubing some good ol’ fashioned how to videos for icing flowers, I said what the heck, let’s do this!

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Joann’s is your BFF when it comes to getting baking supplies on the cheap. They almost always have coupons out for 40-60% off on top of weekly sales on Wilton baking supplies. I could spend a full hour roaming through the four little baking isles but then Chase would get bored and probably drag me out. Anyways, what you’ll need from here are two new icing tips, a terracotta vase and a Styrofoam ball.

This recipe is PERFECT for:

A garden party

Mother’s Day Weekend

A spring tablescape

A graduation party cake or gift

This whole flower pot cupcake thing was surprisingly easy and so much fun to put together! You can find cupcake and icing recipes here and here. Chose between chocolate and vanilla and bake them accordingly. Let them cool down completely.

Meanwhile, place the Styrofoam on top of the pot and squish it down lightly so it’s really stuck in there. Using toothpicks, poke the sharp end into the Styrofoam and push it in about halfway. Do the same with another tooth pick about 2 inches away.

Unwrap one cupcake and slide it over the toothpicks. Make sure it’s secure and the tooth picks are in the middle.

Do steps 2 and 3 for each cupcake until the entire ball is covered in them.

Load up your piping bag with a tip of your choice and colored icing. Pipe the icing out either in jagged lines, pulling motions, swirls or leaves. I chose to do two different colors and did a jagged loop for one and pulling technique for the other. Fill the center of your cupcakes with sprinkles or chocolate chips if you want.

See how easy that was? It took some time and focus but it was so worth it in the end! It’s been a whole day and I still haven’t been able to break it a part…maybe now after writing this post and craving a cupcake I can finally go for it?
